SE - A simple, portable Screen Editor. Further information
===================================== ===================
.DOC files
----------
The .DOC files are formatted and ready for printing on 66 line-per-page
stationery. The tutorial is about 15 pages and the reference manual
is around 60 pages. The short article about SE is 5 pages long and might
be useful to give to friends.
Some of the figures and tables are missing from the documents since
the 'pretty' versions of these were produced using LaTeX. The information
contained in them is available in simple printable form in the reference
manual and the help file(s). The documentation is otherwise complete.
Underlining and emboldening information is embedded in the .DOC files.
Hex 01 is the underline toggle; Hex 06 is the bold toggle. Apologies
to anyone with printers that do something unpleasant with these codes!
Installation
------------
The executable binary will run on its own more-or-less anywhere.
Please consult the reference manual (section 8) about how to fully install
SE on your system. For IBM PCs and the like you may like to use DPATH
which is supplied on the distribution disk together with its manual.
Enhancements
------------
There is an additional method of exiting SE other than E, Q and C
described in the Manual. The W (for Write) exit method does everything
that E does but instead of leaving SE it returns back to the text like
C does. Thus the last version is .bak'd and the newly written version is
in a file with the expected name. This option is useful if you want to
make fine adjustments to a file, shell out of SE to check the result and
return back again to continue adjusting.
Support and further information
-------------------------------
SE is supported by you! If you like SE and want to continue to use
it, that's fine; you don't have to 'register' or feel obliged to make
any 'contributions'. (N.B. Don't let anyone else make you pay
unreasonable sums for SE - it it Fundamentally FREE.)
SE and its documentation is copyrighted by Southampton University.
Please, be reasonable and fair about its use. Copies of the manual
are available separately.
If you don't quite like the way SE works then you can obtain the up-to-date
sources by using the supplied order form. So you really get something for
your money beyond the 'pretty' manual! You can then fix or enhance SE to your
own taste (if you feel you really have to!) or port SE to your favorite
machine. The reference manual (section 8) enumerates the simple terms
regarding use of the source.
The IBM version of SE was generated using Zorland/Zortech C and the
'small' model. Versions have been successfully generated using Borland C
and Microsoft C.
Though it is nice to hear from people who want to know more, pressure
of work etc. prohibits any promise of author support. Please, before
getting in touch with the author, buy and register your copy of the
SE sources. However, if you want to talk about bulk purchases, site use,
use within products or educational use then please write.
